CLAWSA – CONGESTION ZONE ANNIVERSARY EVENT 17th Feb 2004 The CLAWSA (Cities of London and Westminster Society of Architects) Congestion Zone Anniversary Event was held at the GLA City Hall on 17th February 2004. The purpose of the event was to analyse the Congestion Zone as a catalyst for urban design ideas. The speakers for the event were Nicky Gavron (GLA), Sir Terry Farrell (Terry Farrell & Partners), Dan Firth (TfL), John Lett (GLA), Mark Whitby (Whitby Bird Engineers), Jake Desyllas (Intelligent Space), Pat Brown (Central London Partnerships), David Rosenberg (Fosters and Partners) and Peter Fink (Art to Architecture). The event was open to all built environment bodies, consultants and students. The event was put together in the space of two months and was well attended and enjoyed by all. A programme of activities was organised from 15.30hrs to 21.00hrs, starting with speakers, moving to workshop groups and finishing with a judging panel and critique. The speakers focused on the experience of London though some reference to Tokyo and Copenhagen was made. The workshops were predominated by design ideas for pedestrians, ranging from citywide to shopping street schemes, in particular, Oxford Street. Some emphasis was placed on the relationship of pedestrian zones to vehicular transport infrastructure. The GLA requested that members of one of the workshop groups attend forthcoming TfL urban design meetings. As a result of the success of this event CLAWSA hope to host follow on events of a similar nature in the near future, based on topics, which emerged from this event. The topics of the future events are likely to be mental mapping, legibility, making the west end work (Oxford Street), car free zones and linked landmarks. Click here to see images of the event ... The CLAWSA organisers for the event were Azar Djamali, Mark Jankó and Mark Langdon. This event has kindly been sponsored by Call Print |
